Toilet won't flush: 5 fixes from tank to sewer

No flush at all points to the handle/flapper chain; weak flush points to jet holes or a partial clog; flushes fine but water rises and falls slowly = main line. Most handle-and-chain fixes are free with what's in the tank right now.

What to do, in order

  1. Lift the tank lid. Press the handle: if the chain is slack or disconnected, rehook it leaving ½ inch of slack.
  2. If the flapper doesn't lift, the handle arm may be bent or the mount cracked — a $12 universal kit replaces both.
  3. Weak swirl? Hold the tank lid up and check the water level — it should sit ½ inch below the overflow tube. Adjust the fill valve screw or float arm.
  4. Clean the rim jet holes (under the toilet lip) with a mirror and a bent paper clip — hard water plugs them and kills the siphon.
  5. Slow-draining bowl that clears eventually: plunge with a flange plunger 15–20 firm strokes. Still weak? Toilet-paper test: flush 4 sheets — they should go down clean.
  6. Gurgling in the tub or shower when the toilet flushes = shared-line blockage: auger or pro.

Red flags — stop and call a pro

  • Water rising to the rim and staying — shut the supply valve at the wall, then plunge
  • Sewage backing up into a tub or shower — main line, stop using water, call now
  • Tank cracked and weeping water — replace the toilet, don't patch
  • Toilet runs non-stop AND the bowl level keeps dropping — flapper AND possible partial clog

Prevention

Avoid flushable wipes entirely, clean rim jets yearly with vinegar, and replace the flapper at the first sign of running — a $10 part that saves hundreds in ghost water bills.
